CVs and video interviews for European employers

How to write a European-style CV and handle a video interview with German companies — step by step.

Guide7 min readUpdated Jul 2026

A strong application is what turns skills into interviews. European employers expect a specific, no-frills style — and a video interview that shows you are reliable and easy to work with. Here is how to get both right.

What does a European-style CV look like?

Short (1–2 pages), clean and factual: a clear headline, a brief profile, structured work experience with results, skills (including language levels), and education. Substance over decoration.

  • Headline — your role and focus (e.g. “Customer Support Specialist · German B2”).
  • Profile — two or three lines on who you are and what you deliver.
  • Experience — role, company, dates and concrete outcomes.
  • Skills & languages — tools and clearly stated language levels.
  • Education & certificates — including German certificates.

What common mistakes should you avoid?

Most rejections at the CV stage come from avoidable issues:

  • Long, dense CVs with no clear results
  • Heavy graphics that break applicant tracking systems
  • Vague claims (“hardworking team player”) with no evidence
  • Unclear or missing language levels
  • Typos — German employers read carefully

How do you prepare for a video interview?

Be punctual, test your setup, and communicate clearly and directly. German work culture values reliability, structure and honesty over hard selling.

  1. Join 2–3 minutes early; punctuality is taken seriously.
  2. Check camera, microphone, lighting and background beforehand.
  3. Answer in a structured way: situation, action, result.
  4. Be direct and honest about what you know and do not know.
  5. Prepare two or three thoughtful questions about the role and team.

A simple interview answer structure

When asked about experience, use a compact Situation → Action → Result pattern. It keeps you concise and shows outcomes, which European interviewers value.

Before you hit ‘join’

Have one clean CV, a tidy call setup, and a two-line pitch ready. That preparation alone puts you ahead of most applicants.

Frequently asked questions

Should I put a photo on my CV?+

It is optional and increasingly discouraged for remote roles. When in doubt, leave it off and let your experience speak.

How long should my CV be?+

One to two pages. Concise, results-focused CVs perform best with European employers.

What if my internet is unstable for the interview?+

Have a backup: a mobile hotspot, a quieter location, and a note to the interviewer. Showing you plan for reliability is itself a good signal.
